My Story: In the early morning hours of May 31st 2022, Dolphin Research Center welcomed a special little soul. Gypsi’s first calf had been born. The little girl was swimming strongly, but within a few hours the DRC staff would embark on a journey that they never expected.

It soon became clear that Gypsi, a first time mom, didn’t know how to care for her calf. We needed to intervene if this baby was going to survive. The decision was made to take her to our medical pool, and for the next 8 months the staff worked tirelessly to care for her. The team swam with her round the clock, and fed her every 1-2 hours.

Named Bowie after her late grandfather, Bo, this little girl is extremely laid back. Not much bothers her, and she accepts change with a relaxed attitude. This is also a very similar trait to her father, Louie. Bowie looks very much like her mom, and shares the same love for people.

When it was time for Bowie to join the rest of the pod, she was welcomed by Aleta, who took her under her flipper and became a surrogate mom. She also loves to spend time with our youngest dolphin Morada, and these two have lots of fun together.
