[GRASSY KEY, FL] — Dolphin Research Center (DRC) has responded to a request to rehome
multiple marine mammals from Miami Seaquarium. DRC has committed to providing a permanent home for seven individuals, all of whom have special age and health related medical needs. As part of standard best practices and out of an abundance of caution, all seven animals are currently in a 30-day quarantine period. This protocol allows Dolphin Research Center’s animal care and veterinary teams to closely monitor each individual’s health, behavior, and comfort while also supporting a gradual transition from primarily tank-based habitats to DRC’s natural ocean water lagoons. This carefully managed process helps ensure the safety, wellbeing, and long-term success of each animal as they acclimate to their new environment. Until the quarantine period is complete, these animals are not visible to visitors.
The animals relocated to DRC include:
- JJ – 49 year old Bottlenose dolphin
- Samantha – 39 year old Bottlenose dolphin
- Clyde – 21 year old California sea lion
- Raleigh – 14 year old California sea lion
- Ace – 20 year old harbor seal
- Cane – 15 year old harbor seal
- Baby – 33 year old harbor seal
“Dolphin Research Center has a long history of welcoming marine mammals who need
lifelong, specialized care,” said Rita Irwin, President & CEO of Dolphin Research Center.
“Our team is pleased to report that all seven animals are settling in well, and we are committed to supporting them every step of the way as they transition into their new forever home.”
Welcoming seven new permanent residents involves extensive coordination, medical planning, habitat preparation, and ongoing resources. Support from the community plays a vital role in ensuring these animals receive the highest standard of care. DRC welcomes donations at dolphins.org.
“Every contribution makes a meaningful, immediate difference,” said Mandy Rodriguez,
Founder & COO of Dolphin Research Center. “Community support allows us to provide the individualized care, comfort, and dignity these animals deserve as they enter this next chapter of their lives.”
