Grassy Key… Dolphin Research Center (DRC) recently welcomed more than 180 4th and 5th grade students from Key Largo school to participate in a variety of dolphin presentations and environmental activities. The students earned the visit by winning the Upper Keys Fairchild Challenge, an annual standards-based environmental education outreach program funded and supported by the Botanic Gardens at Kona Kai Resort through its partnership with Fairchild Tropical Gardens. DRC provided the opportunity as the grand prize.
At DRC, the students: took part in a paleontological dig; observed dolphin sessions to learn how the dolphins play research games and scientists collect data; became a rescue team in a simulated stranding that showed how scientists respond to marine mammal stranding events and collect information; learned how dolphins use sound to explore their world; and participated in other activities.
“The students’ visit was full of energy and experiential education. In keeping with our mission, Dolphin Research Center was delighted to be their classroom for the two days as part of this terrific learning opportunity,” said Rita Irwin, DRC’s president and CEO.
Founded in 1984, Dolphin Research Center is home to a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. Located at 58901 (mile marker 59) Overseas Highway, Grassy Key, Florida, the center is open daily for the public to see narrated behavior sessions and educational presentations, and to participate in interactive programs with the dolphins. The nonprofit organization is funded by admission and program fees as well as by private donors and members. In addition to being one of the most highly respected education and research facilities in the world, DRC is the Licensed Manatee Rescue Team for the Florida Keys and is an accredited member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums.
