Dolphin Shade

You can provide shade for the dolphins at DRC!

Did you know that dolphins can get sunburned? Humans are not the only mammals to suffer from the effects of the sun. Researchers are finding the same problem with whales and dolphins in the wild. Now that the ozone layer that shields earth from UV radiation is diminishing, there is a greater need to provide more shade for our dolphin family. Have you noticed sun block on their melons?  We use zinc oxide to help protect their skin, but more shading is needed.

Your help will allow us to continue and extend the causeway Tiki out along the boardwalks about 12 feet. This will provide enough shade for every lagoon. Using this style of permanent structure will provide for the dolphins' long term needs while maintaining the beauty of our facility.

This shade is essential for the comfort and well-being of our dolphin family. Your support is crucial to continue our mission of creating strong relationships between marine mammals and people, based on trust and respect. Whether it is a guest visiting DRC or a staff member nurturing sincere friendships with the marine mammals they care for, the bonds and sense of partnership between marine mammals and people is a treasured part of the equation.

Today’s economic times are hard on everyone and it is especially tough for us to shoulder this huge, though essential, expense. We sincerely hope you agree.  Your generosity will provide the shade needed for our entire pod for many years to come. With your help  we can continue to provide a bright future.

Your donation will be matched by a generous grant for this important project that will provide half the total cost of about $40,000.
